This course examines the profound intellectual, religious, political, and social changes that transformed European society between the late medieval period and the mid-seventeenth century. Topics addressed include the impact of Renaissance humanism, the ruptures that emerged within Western European Christendom during the sixteenth century, the formation of confessional churches, creeds, and identities, (both Protestant and Catholic), and the causes and consequences of the Thirty Years War.
