Austin Chase Sigler

Personal Bio: Dr. Sigler earned a B.S. in chemistry and human biology from College of the Ozarks (2017), and a Ph.D. in bioanalytical chemistry from Missouri University of Science and Technology (2023). His research focused on biomarker discovery and mass spectrometry method development towards the assessment of disease states such as traumatic brain injury. Dr. Sigler has broad research interests in small molecule quantitation as well as bridging the gap between secondary and post-secondary chemical education via accessible laboratory practices. When not in the lab Dr. Sigler enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons, strategy games, and traditional archery.

Description

Prerequisite: CHE 124with a grade of C- or better. This course presents organic chemistry with sufficient depth and emphasis on theory for the science major. The following topics are covered: Nomenclature (naming), structure, properties, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy, and mass spectroscopy (MS), reactions of alkenes, alkynes, and dienes (especially electrophilic reactions), resonance and aromaticity, stereochemistry, substitution and elimination reactions of alkyl halides and alcohols, an introduction to multistep synthesis, biomolecules and biological reactions relating to the topics covered. (This includes saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, isomeric biomolecules such as amino acids and carbohydrates, hydration and dehydration reactions, and bio-alkylations such as nucleic acid methylation.)
