Prerequisite: HST 163 or equivalent. A study of the French Revolution of 1789. Topics include society and government under the Old Regime; the political, social, intellectual, and economic origins of the Revolution; the radical phase and Reign of Terror; the impact of ideology and war; the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte; and the Revolution?s legacy for democracy, dictatorship, socialism, warfare, and nationalism.
