This course explores the story of Western Civilization from the emergence of complex societies in the Ancient Near East through the mid-seventeenth century. Together we will examine the roots of western society in the various civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean world, the development of a unique European culture in the fusion of the Greco-Roman, Judeo-Christian, and Germanic traditions in the Middle Ages, and the gradual emergence of the West as a global force in the Early Modern Period.
